Our First Doctor's Visit

Another Erin milestone today. We had our first experience at the pediatrician's office. Momma, Daddy and Baby Erin made a grand debut. Erin was great on the ride over but the minute we walked into the office she started screaming. I'm guessing she just wanted to make an appearance and make sure everyone knew the Mizes were there. Either that or my child is a genius because she already figured out that nothing good happens at the pediatrician's office.

She now weighs 8.5 pounds and is 21 3/4 inches long. She got more blood work done and the entire visit was very stressful on all 3 of us. Without going into too much detail, we haven't had a poopy diaper since we left the hospital. The doctor was concerned so she checked her out really well. Her coloring is great and her stomach was all squishy like it's suppose to be. They took her temp rectally to try to get her to poop, but she stood her ground. Then they sent the nurse in with a suppository. 45 minutes later, still no poop. They did blood work (very traumatic for Momma and Daddy to see) and ordered an x-ray. I was in the x-ray room with her when they took it. She did great and didn't even cry until we were walking back to the exam room. The doctor came back in and said she had a lot of gas but no blockage and just a little stool in her bowels. The doctor said I have super breast milk and that Erin is getting exactly what she needs without much waste left over. She said that was pretty uncommon, but my milk just must be some great stuff. (It ought to be the equivalent of breast milk caviar as long as we waited for it to come in.)

It was a stressful appointment but very reassuring at the same time. I was sweating one minute and trying to relax the next. Tommy was pacing back and forth. I'm just happy to know that she's healthy and doing well. What more could we ask for? We go back in 30 days and they'll x-ray her collarbone again then to see if it's healed up.

We got home, I fed Erin and she passed out. She's been sleeping in her bassinet for a while now. She prefers to be held when she sleeps, but I'm guessing today's activities just wiped her out.

Roxie was all over us when we got home. She sniffed Erin and checked out her car seat like it was made of Milkbones. She jumped up on the bed where I had Erin, sniffed her and just kept looking at me. She's slowly getting used to Erin. Give us a few more weeks and I think we'll be one big happy family.

Whew! What a Whirlwind

In case you didn't know...Erin Grace is finally here!

She was born Tuesday, July 20th at 5:48 pm. She was 8 pounds 13 oz and 21 inches long with a head full of dark brown hair. Our labor time was 27 hours!!! My water broke at 1:15 pm on Monday 7/19. I was actually getting out of my car to get something to eat when my water broke. I was in shock for a few minutes. I just stood there, then had to tell myself to get back in the truck. I called Tommy. He was at work. I have to hand it to him, he was very, very calm when I called. He made sure I could drive, and told me to go straight home and he would meet me here. (I'm not sure if he followed the speed limits, I haven't asked.) From there we packed our bags and headed to the hospital. They admitted me shortly after that and we were in our hospital room by 2:30.

The doctor started the drip of Pitocin to get labor going since my water actually broke. Phone calls were made, and all the grandparents and Aunt Mimi (Amy) showed up. I felt so bad for them. They were there and we waited, and waited, and waited. Without going into too much detail, things moved slowly. At around midnight, the nurse said she thought she felt another water bag in there. Nurses can't do anything about that, only a doctor can rupture the membranes. So, we just hung out until about 4:00 am when they gave me the epidural.

Dr. Strong came back in about 6:30 on Tuesday morning, ruptured the water bag and things slowly started progressing from there. Leave it to me to be a total over achiever and have two water bags! This could certainly explain the severe pelvic pain I was having. I'm assuming that added to the pressure and crowding.

Everyone was still at the hospital on Tuesday afternoon. Aunt Lene, Steph, Nanette, Roy and Matt had joined Team Erin. It was finally time to start pushing and Tommy and Amy were in there with me. I can't believe we pushed for 3 hours, but we did. I gave up at the end and wanted a C-section but the doctor told me we had gone too far and we couldn't. I have never been so tired and spent in all my life. Tommy and Amy were great cheerleaders. They encouraged me to the very end. Somehow, we were able to push her out.

At 5:48 Erin Grace made her appearance. We had the NICU nurses in there with us and they took the baby. The doctor gave Tom the scissors and he was able to cut the cord. From there they went to work on both of us. I was talking and they told me to look over at Erin. I did and she was looking at me. She could hear my voice and she was turning her head. Her vitals were great and they weren't worried about her. (She got stressed out and we had meconium in the amniotic fluid so NICU was called in as a precaution.) I had some complications, but in the end it all worked out. Erin suffered a broken collarbone in the birth. This isn't uncommon with big babies. We have her little arm pins to her clothes so she can't move it. They say it will heal in about 6 weeks and that later in life we won't even be able to tell that she broke it.

We got to come home on Thursday afternoon. We've been trying to figure this baby thing out. Mom and Daddy have stayed with us and Aunt Mimi and Uncle Matt were here Friday night. We've needed the help. Who knew it took so many people to handle one small 8.13 pound baby!! Tonight is our first night alone with her. We're having some breastfeeding issues and we're hoping to get those ironed out soon. So, we're up feeding her about every hour and a half. Right now I should be trying to sleep but for the first time since we got home I can't relax and go to sleep. I think up until now I have just passed out from exhaustion. We went to bed at 9:00 and had the monitor in bed with us watching her. We ended up watching her and talking for that hour and a half. We fed and started over. Right now I have the monitor beside me and I can see Erin, but I can hear Daddy snoring!!

Roxie is doing very well with her. She sniffs her and then goes away. She isn't really fond of the horrible high pitched screaming, but neither are Daddy and Momma! I think they'll be able to work things out. It will be a long time before Erin can chase after her and make her life a living hell. Until then, Roxie can just think about the days when Erin is eating solids and she can work highchair duty.

More later...

Vintage Rocking Horse

Erin got a surprise present from her Daddy and her Great Aunt Norma this week. This rocking horse was Tommy's when he was a little boy. Now Erin has my old Fisher Price toys and Tommy's old rocking horse. (Not to worry, she has plenty of modern toys as well.)

As the story goes, Tommy had it and played with it a lot. He outgrew it and Jimmie was selling it in a garage sale (I assume this was pre-thoughts of Mark.) Aunt Norma saw it, thought Tommy might want it some day and saved it. She has packed it around and moved with it for the last 30 plus years!!! When she found out we were pregnant she told Tommy about it. He didn't remember it until we got it. He said the memories of it came flooding back to him. Aunt Norma cleaned it up and it's Erin ready.

It's very retro and I love it. Erin Grace will be the only kid we know with a lime green 35 year old shag carpet rocking horse! Rock on.

It's Official...40 Weeks Plus

We're officially overdue now. I throw my dairy products away when they get to this point!! What do you do with a stubborn baby??

Tommy and I were talking last night. We both waffle on when we think she's actually be born. We both have thoughts that she'll come before next Friday's induction, but then we both think we'll have to wait for next Friday. It just really is a mystery at this point. I think we can see both scenarios playing out. Either way, we'll have a baby by this time next week.

I was talking to some of the neighbors last night and laughing. (We live on a quiet little cul de sac street where we all know each other.) They're all on baby watch. They have seen Tommy and I coming and going together in the evenings and they all keep thinking it's time. I laughed and told them I was on cooking strike and what they were seeing is us going to eat!! One of the ladies said I did look too happy to be in labor. She's right, I was in it for the snacks!

Instead of being bummed about Erin Grace taking so long, I've decided to look at it as a gift. It's one, two, seven more days of just the two of us. We know that after she gets here it will be great, but very different. I'm going to enjoy this last bit of time with my Prince Charming. (Although, I'm not sure Prince Charming is enjoying his time with whinny Cinderella.)

I had another sit down with Roxie to explain things to her. She isn't very excited about the upcoming changes, but I think she'll come around. She slept in the bed again last night instead of in her "house" or under the bed. I keep the house so cold at night that I think she slept with us under the covers just to stay warm and avoid frostbite. She always stays cold that right after a haircut. Tommy told me that he and Rox could see their breath last night. Wimps!
