Another Erin milestone today. We had our first experience at the pediatrician's office. Momma, Daddy and Baby Erin made a grand debut. Erin was great on the ride over but the minute we walked into the office she started screaming. I'm guessing she just wanted to make an appearance and make sure everyone knew the Mizes were there. Either that or my child is a genius because she already figured out that nothing good happens at the pediatrician's office.
She now weighs 8.5 pounds and is 21 3/4 inches long. She got more blood work done and the entire visit was very stressful on all 3 of us. Without going into too much detail, we haven't had a poopy diaper since we left the hospital. The doctor was concerned so she checked her out really well. Her coloring is great and her stomach was all squishy like it's suppose to be. They took her temp rectally to try to get her to poop, but she stood her ground. Then they sent the nurse in with a suppository. 45 minutes later, still no poop. They did blood work (very traumatic for Momma and Daddy to see) and ordered an x-ray. I was in the x-ray room with her when they took it. She did great and didn't even cry until we were walking back to the exam room. The doctor came back in and said she had a lot of gas but no blockage and just a little stool in her bowels. The doctor said I have super breast milk and that Erin is getting exactly what she needs without much waste left over. She said that was pretty uncommon, but my milk just must be some great stuff. (It ought to be the equivalent of breast milk caviar as long as we waited for it to come in.)
It was a stressful appointment but very reassuring at the same time. I was sweating one minute and trying to relax the next. Tommy was pacing back and forth. I'm just happy to know that she's healthy and doing well. What more could we ask for? We go back in 30 days and they'll x-ray her collarbone again then to see if it's healed up.
We got home, I fed Erin and she passed out. She's been sleeping in her bassinet for a while now. She prefers to be held when she sleeps, but I'm guessing today's activities just wiped her out.
Roxie was all over us when we got home. She sniffed Erin and checked out her car seat like it was made of Milkbones. She jumped up on the bed where I had Erin, sniffed her and just kept looking at me. She's slowly getting used to Erin. Give us a few more weeks and I think we'll be one big happy family.

Whew! What a Whirlwind
In case you didn't know...Erin Grace is finally here!
She was born Tuesday, July 20th at 5:48 pm. She was 8 pounds 13 oz and 21 inches long with a head full of dark brown hair. Our labor time was 27 hours!!! My water broke at 1:15 pm on Monday 7/19. I was actually getting out of my car to get something to eat when my water broke. I was in shock for a few minutes. I just stood there, then had to tell myself to get back in the truck. I called Tommy. He was at work. I have to hand it to him, he was very, very calm when I called. He made sure I could drive, and told me to go straight home and he would meet me here. (I'm not sure if he followed the speed limits, I haven't asked.) From there we packed our bags and headed to the hospital. They admitted me shortly after that and we were in our hospital room by 2:30.
The doctor started the drip of Pitocin to get labor going since my water actually broke. Phone calls were made, and all the grandparents and Aunt Mimi (Amy) showed up. I felt so bad for them. They were there and we waited, and waited, and waited. Without going into too much detail, things moved slowly. At around midnight, the nurse said she thought she felt another water bag in there. Nurses can't do anything about that, only a doctor can rupture the membranes. So, we just hung out until about 4:00 am when they gave me the epidural.
Dr. Strong came back in about 6:30 on Tuesday morning, ruptured the water bag and things slowly started progressing from there. Leave it to me to be a total over achiever and have two water bags! This could certainly explain the severe pelvic pain I was having. I'm assuming that added to the pressure and crowding.
Everyone was still at the hospital on Tuesday afternoon. Aunt Lene, Steph, Nanette, Roy and Matt had joined Team Erin. It was finally time to start pushing and Tommy and Amy were in there with me. I can't believe we pushed for 3 hours, but we did. I gave up at the end and wanted a C-section but the doctor told me we had gone too far and we couldn't. I have never been so tired and spent in all my life. Tommy and Amy were great cheerleaders. They encouraged me to the very end. Somehow, we were able to push her out.
At 5:48 Erin Grace made her appearance. We had the NICU nurses in there with us and they took the baby. The doctor gave Tom the scissors and he was able to cut the cord. From there they went to work on both of us. I was talking and they told me to look over at Erin. I did and she was looking at me. She could hear my voice and she was turning her head. Her vitals were great and they weren't worried about her. (She got stressed out and we had meconium in the amniotic fluid so NICU was called in as a precaution.) I had some complications, but in the end it all worked out. Erin suffered a broken collarbone in the birth. This isn't uncommon with big babies. We have her little arm pins to her clothes so she can't move it. They say it will heal in about 6 weeks and that later in life we won't even be able to tell that she broke it.
We got to come home on Thursday afternoon. We've been trying to figure this baby thing out. Mom and Daddy have stayed with us and Aunt Mimi and Uncle Matt were here Friday night. We've needed the help. Who knew it took so many people to handle one small 8.13 pound baby!! Tonight is our first night alone with her. We're having some breastfeeding issues and we're hoping to get those ironed out soon. So, we're up feeding her about every hour and a half. Right now I should be trying to sleep but for the first time since we got home I can't relax and go to sleep. I think up until now I have just passed out from exhaustion. We went to bed at 9:00 and had the monitor in bed with us watching her. We ended up watching her and talking for that hour and a half. We fed and started over. Right now I have the monitor beside me and I can see Erin, but I can hear Daddy snoring!!
Roxie is doing very well with her. She sniffs her and then goes away. She isn't really fond of the horrible high pitched screaming, but neither are Daddy and Momma! I think they'll be able to work things out. It will be a long time before Erin can chase after her and make her life a living hell. Until then, Roxie can just think about the days when Erin is eating solids and she can work highchair duty.

Vintage Rocking Horse
Erin got a surprise present from her Daddy and her Great Aunt Norma this week. This rocking horse was Tommy's when he was a little boy. Now Erin has my old Fisher Price toys and Tommy's old rocking horse. (Not to worry, she has plenty of modern toys as well.)
As the story goes, Tommy had it and played with it a lot. He outgrew it and Jimmie was selling it in a garage sale (I assume this was pre-thoughts of Mark.) Aunt Norma saw it, thought Tommy might want it some day and saved it. She has packed it around and moved with it for the last 30 plus years!!! When she found out we were pregnant she told Tommy about it. He didn't remember it until we got it. He said the memories of it came flooding back to him. Aunt Norma cleaned it up and it's Erin ready.
It's very retro and I love it. Erin Grace will be the only kid we know with a lime green 35 year old shag carpet rocking horse! Rock on.
It's Official...40 Weeks Plus
We're officially overdue now. I throw my dairy products away when they get to this point!! What do you do with a stubborn baby??
Tommy and I were talking last night. We both waffle on when we think she's actually be born. We both have thoughts that she'll come before next Friday's induction, but then we both think we'll have to wait for next Friday. It just really is a mystery at this point. I think we can see both scenarios playing out. Either way, we'll have a baby by this time next week.
I was talking to some of the neighbors last night and laughing. (We live on a quiet little cul de sac street where we all know each other.) They're all on baby watch. They have seen Tommy and I coming and going together in the evenings and they all keep thinking it's time. I laughed and told them I was on cooking strike and what they were seeing is us going to eat!! One of the ladies said I did look too happy to be in labor. She's right, I was in it for the snacks!
Instead of being bummed about Erin Grace taking so long, I've decided to look at it as a gift. It's one, two, seven more days of just the two of us. We know that after she gets here it will be great, but very different. I'm going to enjoy this last bit of time with my Prince Charming. (Although, I'm not sure Prince Charming is enjoying his time with whinny Cinderella.)
I had another sit down with Roxie to explain things to her. She isn't very excited about the upcoming changes, but I think she'll come around. She slept in the bed again last night instead of in her "house" or under the bed. I keep the house so cold at night that I think she slept with us under the covers just to stay warm and avoid frostbite. She always stays cold that right after a haircut. Tommy told me that he and Rox could see their breath last night. Wimps!

To Be Continued...
Well, it doesn't look like we'll be closing this pregnancy chapter very soon. Had another doctor's appointment today. If Erin Grace doesn't come by next Friday, we're scheduled to induce labor (7/23/10). So, we'll still have a July baby, only a week late July baby. I also go next Wednesday for another ultrasound to measure her size. He said she feels big to him from the external exam, but wants another u/s to make sure before we induce next Friday. Duh!
My blood pressure was a little high today but nothing that concerned him. He said it wasn't too far out of range. What can you expect at the end of 9 months??? My protein levels and swelling are all within range. Minor dilation, and no other major signs of labor coming on. She really is just happy to be along for the ride in there.
I've had two people ask me what will happen if they induce next week and Dr. Strong isn't on call and she comes after hours on Friday night. I really could care less. By next Friday, Tommy could take her out with a chainsaw in the garage and I'd be okay with it.
Roxie was very relieved to have gotten her spa day in today. I took her a little early and she was done after our appointment and lunch. I went in to get her and she was behind the counter with the groomer and two poodles. She was actually being sociable. Maybe she's practicing for when the baby gets here.
More to come as the saga continues...

We're Still Here
Some of the neighbors thought we had had the baby the other night. Mark & Steph, the boys, and Roy & Nanette were over here with Aunt Lene this weekend. We had a lot of cars in the driveway and they thought we had pulled it off!
Ha! Erin showed them!! She's standing firm - literally.
The doctor's office called today. They had a cancellation on Thursday and wanted to know if I wanted to my move appointment. We did. One day closer just seems like things might actually happen one day sooner! Maybe he'll work some OBGYN magic and she'll pop out shortly after that.
The anticipation is what's killing me. I'm just really ready to see her. The problem with being ultra prepared and organized before hand is that when the time comes you have extra time to just think and wait. And anyone who knows me, knows I'm not good at the waiting. I should have put everything off to the last minute so we would be running around like crazy people trying to get it all done. Then time would have flown by. (Genetically, procrastinating and unorganization would have been asking the impossible of her Momma and Daddy! We're way too OCD for that.)
I know, I know, everything happens for a reason and she'll come when she's ready. Yada yada yada, now tell me what I really want to hear. Something like "it's a girl!"

Trail & Error and Wishful Thinking
Well, I can tell you from personal experience that it takes exactly 15 minutes to get from our driveway to Memorial Hermann Hospital at 2:00 am on a Friday night.
Yes, one of my worst fears was realized last night. Since the beginning of this prego journey, I kept telling Tommy that I didn't want to think it was time, have all the hype, go to the hospital and get turned away. I can take the pain and fear of the unknown on the childbirth process, I just didn't want the false alarm bell to ring. I'll be dang'd if it didn't happen anyway.
I had some different things going on all day yesterday that I took to be early labor signs and then last night I thought my water broke. Tommy was asleep and of course, I was up. I waited about an hour and woke him up. We got up, got our stuff together and took off. Turns out the things I had going on are early signs of labor, but my water didn't break. I just had to pee a lot. Still dilated to 1 cm. The early signs can rock along for days/weeks without progressing - oh boy!!
The nurse we had last night was great. I told her I was embarrassed and she told me that it happens VERY often and even nurses come in there thinking they are going into labor and get turned away. Okay, that made it all better. If I was able to move a little more quickly I might have sprung out of the bed and kissed her on the lips.
We got home at 4:30 and got back in bed (yes, I had made the bed before we left, so I had to un-make it again for us to go to sleep. I'm a freak!) Even Rox slept in this morning after all the excitement. When we woke up, Tommy told me he had a dream that I woke him up to tell him my water broke and that we spent 2.5 uncomfortable hours at the hospital in the middle of the night. I think he was testing me to see if he can joke about it yet. He's safe for now. I have to laugh at myself!!

Update - No More Work!!
Had another doctor's appointment today. My blood pressure was a little up, so he took it again before I left. He said it was a little elevated but he isn't that concerned. However, he was concerned about the baby's positioning. He thought she felt like she was in there sideways, so we did an ultrasound while we were there. All is good. She's just kind of crooked and lopsided. The bulk of her big self is on my right side. Her head is down, but she hasn't descended much. I was dilated 1 cm and he could feel her head. (Which is really creepy!) I guess the positive to that is if she hasn't descended much she isn't working on the Cone Head thing right now.
I have another appointment next Friday. If I go past our due date he said he will give me one week. If nothing by then, he'll induce. Don't ask me why, but I think we'll have a baby by then and won't need to go that route.
I came off work today too. Yay!!! It's been so hard to sit all day and work. Since my job is all computer/phones, I just couldn't do it anymore. Now maybe I can relax a little bit before she arrives.
Roxie is concerned that the baby will come on Thursday and interfere with her doggie spa day. She is scheduled for a haircut and bath with Michelle next Thursday and would appreciate it if Erin didn't start messing things up for her already.

Whole Lotta Baby
Posting this for those of you who haven't seen me lately. We have a whole lotta baby on board these days. My stomach is hard a rock and moves like crazy. As I sit here typing this, Erin Grace is practicing her gymnastics. Either that or her trapeze act using the cord to swing from.
Amy hadn't seen me in about 3 weeks and was shocked this weekend at how much I've grown since then. I guess we haven't noticed it because we live it. I know I for sure have the prego waddle. I am constantly waddling to the bathroom!
We're down to the single digits on the countdown. We had Mexican food tonight with Tommy's cousins. I'm hoping to jar something loose soon. I've tried a couple of the old wives tales but our little girl has a mind of her own.
It's very exciting to get up every morning wondering if today is the day. I guess the day better get here soon or I'll be busting out at the seams!

In Your Dreams...
I've read where pregos have strange dreams in the third trimester. I can tell you that is so true. On the baby site I've been on there are shrinks on there helping you figure out what those dreams mean. I'm pretty sure there is no deciphering my dreams. They are beyond odd. No dreams about the birth, what she might look like or someone taking her away from me. No, I dream weird.
So far, I was an international spy with a job at the CIA. I have quit my job several times and in various ways in my dreams, and last night I was a reporter and I interviewed Warren Buffett. Seriously, who dreams these things?
I think the craziest part is that I really don't sleep much and it's never for more than an hour and a half. If I do sleep it's a cat nap a little after midnight, then wide awake until at least 4:00 or 5:00. Then I might snooze until 6:00. Get up to go to the bathroom and go back to sleep until 7:30 or 8:00 sometimes. That's pretty much it.
So, in that short amount of time, I've managed to accomplish quite a resume'. It's turned out to be kind of fun. Tonight I plan on concentrating on Matthew McConaughey right before I doze off :)

Baby Watch
For those of you on Baby Watch, we're still at Defcon 1.
Had an appointment this morning. My blood pressure was back to perfect and everything else looks good too. Minimal swelling in my feet and hands, but the swelling on my face concerns him a little. Nothing major, just wants to watch it. We're just rocking and rolling (literally!).
He did an exam and said the cervix is just beginning to soften a tiny bit. Said I wasn't dilated and that we would probably not have a baby this weekend. He said you just never know, but things don't look right at this stage for Erin's Grand Arrival. I go back next Friday. The test that they did last time for the strep bacteria came back negative. That's one more complication we get to avoid. Overall it was a very good report. Yay!
I'm a little disappointed that we're not closer to the actual delivery, but it appears I make a really comfy home. I know she's in there for as long as she suppose to be and she'll come when she's ready - and not when I'm ready! Too bad she'll be an only child. It appears I was built for gestation!
So, in the meantime, at ease soldiers. Eat, drink and be merry over the 4th, but please be safe.

Week 38
Tomorrow will be 38 weeks. Everyone keeps telling me that this pregnancy has just flown by for them. I can't say I share the same thoughts. I looked back at the blog the other day and it seems like so long ago we found out we were pregnant. Tommy's FB post today was about it finally being July, her birth month. I think our impatient personalities are coming out...
We have another doctor's appointment tomorrow morning. Hopefully, I have something great to report/post. I keep thinking I must be getting closer. I've had a couple of practice contractions and there is a lot of pressure now. Fingers crossed that gravity takes over soon and she just tumbles out.
This week the baby keeps growing. She's packing on the pounds and continues to grow. The book says all systems are a go for birth. These last weeks she supposed to continue to shed that funky baby fur they have in the womb. For that reason alone, I'm not so sad that she hasn't made her appearance yet. I'm a realist. No new born is pretty, you add the werewolf factor and I'm okay with her cooking a while longer. No offense to her Daddy, but I really, really can't stress enough how I hope she's un-hairly like her Momma!!!
This prego journey has been an experience. We've had some scares and had a lot of laughs (mainly at my expense), but all in all it's been very good. I can honestly say that I knew the birth itself would be painful, but I never expected the pain before birth to be so hard. I literally feel like my pelvis is breaking in two. Just when I think the pain can't get much worse, I wake up to a new day. It's brought tears to my eyes a couple of times today. I just keep telling myself that it's not for much longer. I just have to tough it out and remind myself how very fortunate we are to have had such a healthy pregnancy. Even with my "advanced maternal age" we have been so blessed.
So, enough complaining. Bring on the epidural and the werewolf kid already.
